Aging-in-Place certification designation

Rose Arnone of Della Rosa Designs, is now one of the select group of professionals nationwide to earn the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation. This identifies her as an Interior Designer with the skills and knowledge necessary to recommend remodeling modifications to home owners. These recommendations meet the unique needs of the older population, disabled owners or their visitors.

The National Association of Home Builders, in partnership with the AARP and NAHB Research Center, created the CAPS program. This program includes training and education on technical, business management and customer service skills. These skills are essential to compete in the fastest-growing segment of the residential remodeling industry — home modifications for aging-in-place.

Della Rosa Designs was created to fulfill a passion for beautiful homes, places and spaces. Specializing in timeless elegance with the use of color, Rose focuses her business on home interiors and renovation management. As an Aging-in-Place specialist, Rose combines safety features and function, with the trained knowledge of what makes for good design.

CAPS graduates include remodelers, builders, designers, architects, occupational therapists and others. These professionals help homeowners remain in their homes safely, independently and comfortably as they age.

In three days of coursework, the CAPS curriculum incorporates market demographics, communication techniques, marketing, common barriers and solutions, building codes and standards, product ideas and resources and business management.

CAPS program graduates are required to maintain their designation by attending continuing education programs and/or participating in community service projects.

Defining the Design Goal

During an initial consultation, I always ask my clients why they are renovating and what their expectations are from the result. In this case, the property is an investment, a rental that is expected to stay in the family for many years. That particular fact alone helps to guide my design choices, the color palette, as well as the finishings.

Adding Warmth with Color

The client wanted a clean, almost minimalist look and my goal was to deliver on that expectation but also to add a bit of warmth, knowing that this would be someone’s home. I wanted to be sure to choose a palette that could go with just about any style without being too particular. Instead of the usual combination of white and grey, I went with white, greige and taupe throughout, picking up some of the warmth in the new floor. All the materials and colors in this renovation are interchangeable, giving a total look of cohesion throughout the property.

Current, yet Timeless Materials

We stayed current while still being timeless, adding unique touches with penny round tiles in the guest bath, and 4 x 12 subway tile with a glass accent in the kitchen. The countertop is the same throughout, Cotton White quartz by Pental. The floor is Luxury Vinyl Plank by Naturally Aged Flooring and the window treatments by Horizons, a combination of wide panels and soft, functional roller shades. The fireplace was created using a grooved tile and contrasting slate hearth, also by Pental. The painted mantel picks up the taupe in the slate to create a focal point for the room.

The result is harmonious and fresh, and ready for one lucky family!
